Stress in Relationships

Surveys have repeatedly shown money is the primary source of stress in relationships, and it’s no wonder—most couples receive little to no guidance around important financial questions before they tie the knot. Even a few basic conversations can help prepare couples to talk about finances as a unit:

  • How does each spouse value money? How do they make financial decisions?
  • How do their short and long-term goals and strategies compare and integrate?
  • What are some of the known financial and legal considerations married couples face?

How can two people communicate when one or both partners feel uncomfortable or challenged?

Finding the Answers

Couples can find the answers to those questions and more with Marriage & Money: Planning For Forever AfterTM, an innovative new workshop. Most couples—even successful ones—limit their pre-wedding financial discussion to budgets and whether they should combine their checking and savings accounts. While these discussions are important, they are not enough to tackle the complexities of finances today. Marriage is about two people building a life together, and finances play a big role in shaping that future.

Some premarital counseling programs address the emotional and communication components of relationship conflicts over money, but not the money conversations themselves. The Marriage & Money workshop incorporates the missing financial piece to help couples make better financial decisions and alleviate some of the stress and tension associated with money conversations.

Ad-free workshop

This workshop is designed so couples learn about financial issues without any sales pressure. Participants can utilize their new knowledge to begin addressing these issues on their own, or find a trusted professional to help on their journey.

The average age of engaged couples today is +30, as people are getting married later in life, and a growing number of people marry more than once. This means partners enter their relationships with more “stuff," like: Established Careers, 401(k)s, Real Estate, Insurance, Employee Benefits, Stock Options, Businesses, and—perhaps most importantly—an established money value system.

These aspects are typically beyond the themes addressed in marriage counseling. The Marriage and Money workshop was specifically developed as an extension of pre-marital counseling that some couples receive before marriage.

Our goal is to help workshop attendees simplify their life merger by breaking it into digestible pieces and helping couples build a roadmap for financial success—together.
